Slow Cooker Angel Chicken

This recipe has been on regular rotation in my kitchen for years now.
I’ve tried different versions of slow cooker creamy chicken dishes, but this one is the one I keep coming back to.
It’s simple and satisfying—the kind of recipe that’s made with pantry staples but tastes like something you’d order at your favorite cozy diner.
Just a few minutes of prep, and your slow cooker does the rest.
We usually serve it over angel hair pasta, but it’s just as good on mashed potatoes, rice, or even tucked into a biscuit.
However you plate it, the sauce is the star—it’s what makes this dish so craveable.
For the Chicken and Sauce
- Chicken Breast – Boneless and skinless; about 1.5 pounds. You can also use thighs for more flavor.
- Garlic – 3 cloves; chopped for bold flavor or left whole for a subtler taste.
- Cream of Chicken Soup – One 10.5 oz can, undiluted; adds rich, creamy body to the sauce.
- Chicken Stock – ¾ cup; thins the sauce slightly while keeping it flavorful.
- Cream Cheese – 4 oz, softened; melts into the sauce for a tangy, velvety finish.
- Butter – ¼ cup, softened; enhances the richness and smoothness of the sauce.
- Italian Dressing Mix – 0.6 oz dry packet; use it straight from the packet to season the sauce.
To Serve
- Angel Hair Pasta – 1 pound, cooked right before serving; its light texture pairs perfectly with the creamy sauce.

Slow Cooker Angel Chicken
.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 3 garlic cloves (chopped or whole)
- 10.5 oz can cream of chicken soup
- ¾ cup chicken stock
- 4 oz cream cheese
- ¼ cup butter
- 0.6 oz dry Italian dressing mix (like Good Seasons – do not prepare as directed on package)
- 1 lb angel hair pasta
Instructions
- Spray the inside of your slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray.
- Place the chicken breasts in the bottom of the slow cooker. Add the garlic.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, soften the cream cheese and butter. Stir until smooth.
- Add the cream of chicken soup, dry Italian dressing mix, and chicken stock to the bowl. Whisk until fully combined.
- Pour the sauce over the chicken.
- Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours.
- (Optional but recommended): About 30 minutes before the end of cooking, shred the chicken with two forks, stir it back into the sauce, and let it finish cooking.
- While the chicken finishes, cook the angel hair pasta according to package directions. Drain.
- Serve the creamy chicken over the pasta.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Freezing isn’t recommended, as the sauce may separate and become grainy when reheated.
- Be sure to use the dry Italian dressing mix—not bottled dressing.
- Do not prepare the dressing mix as directed on the packet; it’s meant to be used dry in this recipe.
- A slow cooker liner or a generous spray of non-stick cooking spray will make cleanup much easier.

- Can I use frozen chicken breasts directly in the slow cooker?
It’s recommended to thaw chicken breasts before placing them in the slow cooker to ensure even cooking and maintain food safety standards. Cooking frozen chicken can result in uneven cooking and may keep the chicken in the temperature “danger zone” for too long, where bacteria can grow.
- Is it necessary to sear the chicken before adding it to the slow cooker?
Searing the chicken is optional. While it adds a depth of flavor and a pleasing color to the dish, you can skip this step to save time. If you choose to skip searing, simply place the raw chicken directly into the slow cooker and proceed with the recipe as directed.
- Can I use a different type of pasta instead of angel hair?
Absolutely! While angel hair pasta complements the creamy sauce well, you can substitute it with other pasta types such as spaghetti, fettuccine, penne, or even serve the dish over rice or mashed potatoes. Choose your preferred base to enjoy with the flavorful sauce.
- How can I prevent the sauce from becoming too thick or too thin?
To achieve the desired sauce consistency:
- If the sauce is too thick: Gradually stir in additional chicken broth or pasta water until you reach the preferred consistency.
- If the sauce is too thin: Allow it to cook uncovered for the last 20-30 minutes to enable some liquid to evaporate and thicken. Alternatively, you can mix a small amount of cornstarch with water to create a slurry and stir it into the sauce, cooking for a few additional minutes until it thickens.
- How should I store and reheat leftovers?
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When reheating:
- Microwave: Heat in microwave-safe dishes in 1-minute intervals, stirring in between, until thoroughly warmed.
- Stovetop: Warm over medium heat, stirring occasionally. If the sauce has thickened too much upon cooling, add a splash of chicken broth or milk to loosen it to the desired consistency.
