Warm from the oven with crisp edges, soft centers, and pools of melted chocolate, these chocolate chip cookies are the kind of treat that disappears quickly. They’re simple enough for a weekday baking project, but special enough to make whenever you want a classic homemade cookie.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
There’s something especially satisfying about a chocolate chip cookie that has just the right texture—golden around the edges, soft in the middle, and packed with chocolate. This recipe keeps things simple, with everyday ingredients and no required chilling time. You can bake the dough right away or save part of it for later, making it easy to have fresh cookies whenever the craving hits.
For Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies
- Unsalted Butter – softened butter helps create a smooth, creamy dough and contributes to the cookies’ tender texture.
- Granulated Sugar – adds sweetness and helps the cookies develop lightly crisp edges as they bake.
- Light Brown Sugar – brings extra moisture and a rich caramel-like flavor, helping keep the centers soft and chewy.
- Eggs – bind the ingredients together and add structure while keeping the cookies tender.
- Vanilla Extract – adds a warm, aromatic flavor that complements the butter and chocolate.
- All-Purpose Flour – forms the main structure of the cookies. Measure it correctly so the dough doesn’t become too dry.
- Baking Soda – helps the cookies rise and spread while contributing to their golden edges.
- Salt – balances the sweetness and makes the chocolate flavor stand out.
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips – provide the rich chocolate pockets throughout the cookies, with extra chips reserved for the tops.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1
Start by bringing the butter and sugars together until the mixture is light and creamy. This step gives the cookies their soft, tender texture, so don’t rush it.
Step 2
Next, add the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sifted baking soda. Add the dry ingredients gradually, mixing just until incorporated, then fold in the chocolate chips.
Step 3
Scoop the dough into generous portions and arrange them on lined baking sheets, leaving room for the cookies to spread. Add a few reserved chocolate chips to the tops before baking for an extra chocolatey finish.
Step 4
Bake until the edges are just turning golden while the centers still look slightly underdone. Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before moving them to a cooling rack. They’ll continue to set as they cool.
Expert Tips
The texture of these cookies comes down to a few small details. Make sure the butter is properly softened rather than melted, and give the butter and sugars the full mixing time called for in the recipe.
When measuring the flour, fluff it first and spoon it into the measuring cup before leveling the top. Too much flour can make the cookies dense and prevent them from spreading properly.
Once the flour goes in, mix only until the dough comes together. Overmixing can make the finished cookies less tender.
Keep an eye on the oven near the end of baking. The cookies should look a little soft in the center when they come out—that’s what helps them stay chewy as they cool.

Recipe Variations
This is an easy cookie dough to make your own. Semi-sweet chocolate chips give you the classic flavor, but there are plenty of ways to change things up.
Try milk chocolate for a sweeter cookie or bittersweet chocolate for a deeper chocolate flavor. You can also replace some or all of the chocolate chips with peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips, white vanilla baking chips, M&M candies, macadamia nuts, chopped peanuts, shredded coconut, or pretzel pieces.
For an especially chocolatey finish, press a few additional chocolate chips into the tops of the dough balls before baking.
Storage & Reheating
Once cooled, store the baked cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
For make-ahead baking, the dough can be refrigerated for up to 3 days. You can also freeze scooped portions of dough after freezing them on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 1 hour. Transfer the frozen dough balls to a freezer zip-top bag and bake when needed.
Frozen dough can be thawed in the refrigerator before baking, or baked straight from frozen with a little additional baking time.
To bring leftover cookies back to that fresh-from-the-oven feel, warm them in a toaster oven or bake at 350°F for 2–3 minutes.
Serving Suggestions
These cookies are hard to resist while they’re still warm, especially when the chocolate is soft and melted. Serve them with a cold glass of milk, a cup of coffee, or your favorite tea.
For an easy dessert, warm a cookie and serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. You can also make a simple cookie platter for gatherings by pairing them with other homemade cookies and a bowl of fresh berries.

Recipe FAQs
1. Can I use melted butter instead of softened butter?
It’s best to use softened butter for this recipe. The butter and sugars need to be creamed together until light and fluffy, which helps give the cookies their soft, chewy texture.
2. Why are my cookies spreading too much?
This can happen when the butter is too warm or the flour isn’t measured correctly. Make sure your butter is softened rather than melted, and spoon the flour into the measuring cup before leveling it. Avoid scooping the flour directly from the container.
3. Do I need to chill the cookie dough?
No, you can bake the cookies right away. If you want to prepare the dough ahead of time, you can cover and refrigerate it until you’re ready to bake. Chilled dough may need a little extra time in the oven.
4. How do I know when the cookies are done?
The cookies should have edges that are just turning golden, while the tops and centers still look slightly under-baked. Let them rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes after coming out of the oven. They’ll continue to set as they cool.
5. How can I keep the cookies soft after baking?
Store the cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. When you want to enjoy one warm, place it in a toaster oven or bake at 350°F for 2–3 minutes to bring back that freshly baked texture.

Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, (16 Tbsp), softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup light brown sugar, tightly packed
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 cup all-purpose flour, measured correctly*
- 1 tsp baking soda, sifted
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, (12 oz), divided reserving 1/4 cup for the top
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350˚ F. Line a baking sheet with parchment or Silpat liner. In the bowl of a stand mixer with paddle attachment, combine 2 sticks of butter, 1 cup of packed brown sugar and 1/2 cup of white sugar. Beat 5 minutes on medium/high speed until creamy and light, scraping down the bowl as needed.
- Add 2 eggs, one at a time, beating well with each addition, scraping down the bowl as needed, then beat in 2 tsp of vanilla.
- In a separate bowl, combine 3 cups of flour, 1 tsp salt, and 1 tsp of baking soda (sifted to eliminate lumps). Add the flour mixture to the creamed butter in thirds, mixing to incorporate with each addition. Fold in 2 cups of chocolate chips.
- Use an ice cream scoop to get even balls of dough (3 Tbsp each). Place scoops of dough onto lined baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Mine fit onto 3 cookie sheets and made 26 cookies. Roll balls lightly with your hands then stud tops of cookie balls with reserved chocolate chips. Bake right away or cover and refrigerate until ready to bake.
- Bake one cookie sheet at a time for 12-15 min at 350˚F (we bake 12 minutes), until edges are just turning golden. The tops should still look under-baked. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet 5 min then transfer to a rack to cool.
