Homemade Chicken and Dumplings – Simple and Delicious
Craving a warm, comforting meal that feels like a hug in a bowl? This homemade chicken and dumplings recipe is exactly what you need. With tender chicken, savory broth, and fluffy dumplings, it’s an easy, one-pot wonder that’ll make you feel right at home.
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Cut the butter into the dry ingredients using a fork or pastry cutter, until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually add the milk, mixing with a fork until the dough comes together into a ball.
Lightly flour a clean surface for rolling out the dough. Use a rolling pin to roll it out to your desired thickness (about 1/4 inch).
Flour your cutter (a pizza cutter works great) and cut the dough into squares—about 2 inches by 2 inches. Don't worry if they aren’t all the same size or shape—it's okay if they’re a bit uneven!
Carefully transfer the dumplings to a plate, dusting each layer with flour to prevent sticking. If you're not cooking them immediately, you can layer them with wax paper and flour on a cookie sheet, or freeze them for later use.
To cook the dumplings, bring the chicken broth to a boil in a large pot. Drop the dumplings in one at a time, stirring gently as you add them. The extra flour on the dumplings will help thicken the broth.
Let the dumplings cook for 15-20 minutes, or until they are no longer doughy in the center.
Stir in the cooked chicken, and your homemade chicken and dumplings are ready to serve!
