A hearty tomato-and-meat pasta sauce made with ground beef, onion, tomato sauce, tomato paste, herbs, and pantry seasonings. It comes together on the stovetop and simmers for 30 minutes before serving with spaghetti.
1poundground beef, (or ½ lb ground Italian sausage and ½ lb ground beef)
salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1medium onion, chopped
15ouncestomato sauce
6ouncestomato paste
1/2tspItalian seasoning
1tbspdried parsley flakes
1tspgarlic powder
crushed red pepper flakes, to taste
1tbspWorcestershire sauce
1tbspgranulated sugar
1cupwater
1/4cupfresh basil leaves, (optional)
spaghetti noodles, for serving
Instructions
Add salt and pepper to the ground beef.
Place the beef and chopped onion in a large skillet and cook until the meat is browned. Drain away the excess grease.
Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, parsley, garlic powder, crushed red pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar.
Mix everything thoroughly and bring the sauce to a boil. Pour in the water and stir again until combined.
Lower the heat and allow the sauce to simmer for 30 minutes. If using the fresh basil, chop it and stir it in before serving.
Serve with spaghetti noodles. The finished sauce can also be used in dishes such as spaghetti pie, baked spaghetti, slow-cooker lasagna, or pressure-cooker spaghetti.

Recipe Notes
Meat option: Use 1 pound ground beef, or substitute ½ lb ground Italian sausage and ½ lb ground beef as listed in the recipe.
Adjust the heat: Add crushed red pepper flakes to taste. Use less for a mild sauce or a little more if you prefer some heat.
Drain the grease: After browning the beef and onion, drain the excess grease before adding the remaining sauce ingredients.
Fresh basil: The basil is optional. If using it, chop and add it just before serving.
Gluten-free: Use gluten-free Worcestershire sauce and gluten-free spaghetti noodles.
Make ahead: The sauce can be prepared in advance and refrigerated for 3 to 4 days.
Freezing: Cool the sauce completely before freezing. Store it in the freezer for up to 4–6 months.
Reheating: Reheat the sauce in a pot on the stovetop until warmed through.
