Ingredients

For the casserole

  • 29 -ounce can sweet potatoes, drained
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs, beaten

For the topping

  • 5 tbsp salted butter, melted
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  • Heat the oven to 350°F. Place the drained sweet potatoes in a large bowl and mash them.
  • Add ½ cup (1 stick) melted salted butter, ⅓ cup milk, ¾ cup sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 2 beaten large eggs. Stir until everything is thoroughly combined.
  • Transfer the sweet potato mixture to a 2-quart (8-inch square) baking dish and spread it evenly.
  • In a separate bowl, combine 5 Tablespoons melted salted butter, ⅔ cup brown sugar, ⅔ cup all-purpose flour, and 1 cup chopped pecans. Work the ingredients together with a fork or your fingers until small crumbles form.
  • Scatter the crumble mixture evenly over the sweet potato filling.
  • Bake uncovered for 30–40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown.
  • Remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 15–20 minutes before serving. This resting period gives the filling time to firm up as it cools.

Recipe Notes

  • The casserole can be assembled ahead of time, covered tightly, and refrigerated overnight. Before baking, allow it to come toward room temperature; otherwise, it may require additional baking time.
  • For longer storage, the assembled casserole can be wrapped securely and frozen. Thaw it overnight in the refrigerator before following the regular baking directions, or bake it from frozen with additional cooking time.
  • Leftovers can be covered and refrigerated for up to 3 days. For freezer storage, wrap the casserole well to protect it from freezer burn; it can be frozen for up to 6 months.
  • Fresh sweet potatoes may be used instead of canned. About 4 small sweet potatoes are needed. Cook them until completely tender, then peel if necessary, mash, and proceed with the recipe.
  • For a marshmallow version, omit the pecan topping and add mini marshmallows near the end of baking, during approximately the final 10 minutes, so they brown without burning. You can also prepare the casserole with half pecan topping and half marshmallows.
  • The chopped pecans may be replaced with another preferred nut, such as almonds, cashews, or peanuts, or omitted entirely.
  • If doubling the recipe, a 9×13-inch baking dish can be used, though the baking time will need to be adjusted.
